Last year, EeroQ sponsored a collaboration with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) undergraduates for a Senior Design Project as a part of an Engineering Design requirement for graduation. EeroQ’s Chief Science Officer Johannes Pollanen, led the collaborative project, “High-impedance superconducting microwave frequency resonators for quantum computing.” The objective of the project was to design, nano-fabricate, and test novel high-impedance microwave coplanar waveguide resonators. .  

Participating students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the multidisciplinary processes involved in creating a quantum prototype device, from design and fabrication to measurement. Additionally, students experienced working in a real-world research and development environment, engaging with the pace, expectations, and teamwork that define a professional quantum technology workforce. . 

Spearheading the EeroQ and UIC collaboration, Professor Zizwe Chase stated, “UIC being in the Chicagoland area has given our students the opportunity and privilege to not only visit a preeminent Quantum Start-up, but with the graciousness shown by EeroQ, has allowed our students to work with a real quantum company in a hands-on project. It shows the commitment that EeroQ has to the development of the quantum workforce and that UIC is a growing pipeline of such talent in quantum.”.  

In addition to completing the Senior Design Project, the participating students have learned new skills in high-frequency electromagnetic simulation, superconducting device design, and nano-fabrication. Gage Gerding, a UIC student, expressed excitement about EeroQ’s mission after working on the design project, touring the facility, and communicating with EeroQ team members as resources to refine their skills. Reflecting on their experience participating in this project with EeroQ, Gage remarked, “There is also a very exploratory culture that you might expect to find in a more academic setting, but anytime I have a question or hit a roadblock, I am comfortable reaching out for help, and I am always greeted with enthusiasm.” He is now continuing the project as they pursue a PhD in Physics. 

This initiative is a first of its kind at EeroQ, and it has left a lasting impression on both the participating students and Professor Pollanen. He stated, “Working with the UIC students has been a fantastic experience! Their enthusiasm, excitement, and curiosity about quantum computing and quantum technologies in general is inspiring. At EeroQ, we’re excited to help develop the next generation of a quantum-ready workforce right here in Chicago.”
